Grades of Canned Grapefruit
- U.S. Grade A or U.S. Fancy is the quality of canned grapefruit that:
- has an average drained weight of not less than 53 percent of the water capacity of the container, of which not less than 65 percent by weight of the drained grapefruit consists of whole or practically whole segments;
- has a good color;
- is practically free from defects;
- has a good character;
- has good flavor and odor; and
- scores not less than 90 points when scored in accordance with the scoring system outlined in this subpart.
- U.S. Grade B or U.S. Choice is the quality of canned grapefruit that:
- has an average drained weight of not less than 53 percent of the water capacity of the container, of which not less that 50 percent by weight of the drained grapefruit consists of whole or practically whole segments (sample average);
- has reasonably good color;
- is reasonably free from defects;
- has a reasonably good character;
- has a reasonably good flavor and odor; and
- scores not less than 80 points when scored in accordance with the scoring system outlined in this subpart
- U.S. Broken is the quality of canned grapefruit that:
- has an average drained weight of not less than 53 percent of the water capacity of the container, of which less than 50 percent by weight of the drained grapefruit consists of whole or practically whole segments (sample average);
- has at least a reasonably good color;
- is at least reasonably free from defects;
- has at least a reasonably good character;
- has at least a reasonably good flavor and odor; and
- scores not less than 70 points when scored in accordance with the scoring system outlined in this subpart.
- U.S. Grade D or Substandard is the quality of canned grapefruit that fails to meet the requirements of U.S. Grade B and U.S. Broken.
