The Agriculture Reauthorizations Act of 2015 specified that USDA complete, by March 1, 2018, a study through the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) and the Office of the Chief Economist, and in consultation with the livestock and meat industry, that will analyze current marketing practices and Livestock Mandatory Reporting (LMR) price and supply information reporting services, and identify legislative and regulatory recommendations.
To help inform this comprehensive review, AMS commissioned a baseline “as is” study of the livestock and meat industry and LMR, which was completed August 2016. To gather feedback from industry stakeholders, AMS has invited members of the industry to participate in a series of structured stakeholder meetings to openly discuss the marketing methods, current challenges with reporting market information of livestock and meat markets, and needs of the industry regarding future revisions to LMR. AMS’ objective of these meetings is to seek individual feedback and advice from the attendees on what each organization in each commodity area would like changed in the next reauthorization of LMR.
AMS will use this information as the basis for a report due to Congress by March 1, 2018, that will promote an orderly reauthorization of LMR in 2020.
