Order Authority and Regulations
The marketing order authorizes quality regulations, research and promotion programs, as well as markings, pack, and container regulations for citrus grown in the Lower Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. The order became effective in 1960 and was last amended under formal rulemaking August 4, 1966. View the full regulation.
- Quality Regulations: The marketing order authorizes grade, size, maturity, and quality regulations to maintain citrus quality shipped to consumers. These requirements established for oranges also apply to imported oranges September 1 through June 30 each year due to 8e requirements.
- 8e Requirements: 8e requirements specify that imported commodities must meet the same or comparable minimum grade, size, quality, and maturity requirements, as those specified under this marketing order. Learn about Importing Oranges.
- Research and Promotion: The marketing order authorizes production research, marketing promotion and development, to include paid advertising. Projects in these areas are currently active.
- Markings, pack, and container regulations: The marketing order authorizes regulations on the markings or labeling, size, capacity, and weight of the containers used to ship citrus to market.
Committee Structure
The Texas Valley Citrus Committee is comprised of 15 members (9 producers and 6 handlers) and their alternates. Seven producers and five handlers are independent representatives, and two producers and one handler are cooperative representatives. Members and alternates serve a 3-year staggered term of office that begins August 1. The staggered selection permits one-third of committee members and alternates to be selected each year.
