The Native Village of Port Heiden, a Federally Recognized Tribe, is located in Alaska, 424 miles southwest of Anchorage. Local Food Distribution program’s purpose is to provide tribal members with locally sourced food purchased from local food producers, our salmon fishermen. This program will buy salmon from local salmon fisher producers, store, ship, and deliver food to all community members and all other tribal members. The beneficiaries will be community members and tribal members of the Native Village of Port Heiden, both the salmon fisher producers and the community members. The purpose of this program is to maintain and improve food security and supply chain resiliency. The goal of this program is to increase access to local food and improve supply chain resiliency by building partnerships with local and regional producers, socially disadvantaged producers, and underserved communities. The cooperative agreement will allow the tribe to procure and distribute local and regional foods that are healthy, nutritious, unique to their geographic areas and that meet the needs of the population. In addition to increasing local food consumption, the funds will help build and expand economic opportunity for local and underserved producers.
