The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe (LLBO) Farm to Consumer Food Initiative will purchase $300,000 per year of culturally appropriate food from regional farmers, with a focus on those operated by indigenous or other minority communities over a three-year period. The funds will be used to provide product to low-income tribal members that reside in food desert or those known to be chronically food insecure which will also include those living in the Twin Cities area. Distribution will occur through the LLBO Elderly Nutrition Program, community events, community centers, and home delivery. Additional distribution will occur through a food backpack program at area schools and Leech Lake Head Start locations. LLBO plans to enter purchasing agreements with at least five producers, three of which would be BIPOC or other minority groups by the end of 2024. The chosen producers will be encouraged to partner with the tribe in developing a local farming curriculum.
