Grades of Texas (and States other than Florida, California and Arizona) Grapefruit
- Basic requirements:
- Discoloration:
- Not more than one-tenth of the surface, in the aggregate, may be affected by discoloration. (See §51.638.)
- Firm;
- Mature;
- Similar varietal characteristics;
- Smooth texture;
- Well formed; and,
- Well colored.
- Discoloration:
- Free from:
- Ammoniation;
- Bruises;
- Buckskin;
- Cuts not healed;
- Skin breakdown;
- Decay;
- Growth cracks;
- Scab;
- Sprayburn; and,
- Wormy fruit.
- Not injured by:
- Green spots;
- Oil spots;
- Scale;
- Scars; and,
- Thorn scratches.
- Not damaged by any other cause.

2. U.S. No. 1 consists of grapefruit which meet the following requirements:
- Basic requirement:
- Discoloration:
- Not more than one-half of the surface, in the aggregate, may be affected by discoloration. (See §51.638.)
- Firm;
- Mature;
- Similar varietal characteristics;
- Fairly well colored;
- Fairly smooth texture; and,
- Fairly well formed.
- Discoloration:
- Free from:
- Bruises;
- Cuts not healed;
- Caked melanose;
- Growth cracks;
- Sprayburn;
- Decay; and,
- Wormy fruit.
- Not damaged by any other cause.

3. U.S. No. 1 Bright. The requirements for this grade are the same as for U.S. No. 1 except that no fruit may have more than one-tenth of its surface, in the aggregate, affected by discoloration.

- Basic requirements:
- Discoloration:
- Not more than two-thirds of the surface, in the aggregate, may be affected by discoloration. (See §51.638.)
- Fairly firm;
- Mature;
- Similar varietal characteristics;
- May be slightly colored;
- Not more than slightly misshapen, and,
- Not more than slightly rough texture.
- Discoloration:
- Free from:
- Bruises;
- Cuts not healed;
- Growth cracks;
- Decay; and,
- Wormy fruit.
- Not seriously damaged by any other cause.

- Basic requirements:
- Mature;
- Similar varietal characteristics;
- May be misshapen;
- May be slightly spongy;
- May have rough texture;
- Not seriously lumpy or cracked; and,
- May be poorly colored.
- Not more than 25 percent of the surface may be of a solid dark green color.
- Free from:
- Cuts not healed;
- Decay; and,
- Wormy fruit.
- Not very seriously damaged by any other cause.
