Release No.:  038-17

WASHINGTON, March 31, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking nominees for the Paper and Packaging Board. The 12-member board will hold elections to fill four seats for members whose terms will expire Dec. 31, 2017. Each member will serve a three-year term. To be eligible, nominees must manufacture or import 100,000 short tons or more of paper and paper-based packaging annually.

USDA encourages board membership that reflects the diversity of the industry it represents. The deadline for submitting nominations is April 17, 2017.

More details are available on the Paper and Packaging Board page on USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) website. You may also contact USDA Marketing Specialist Marlene Betts at (202) 720-9915 or email marlene.betts@ams.usda.gov.

The board consists of 11 manufacturers from four regions and one importer. From the four regions, seven members are from the South, one member is from the Northeast, two members are from the Midwest and one member is from the West. Domestic manufacturers will fill three seats, one seat each from the South, Midwest, and Northeast regions respectively. In addition, there will be one importer seat to fill.

The board meets periodically to plan marketing and promotional activities that benefit the industry. The national program is industry-funded and supports the national marketing and promotion of paper and paper-based packaging since 1994. AMS provides oversight, paid for by industry assessments, which helps ensure fiscal responsibility, program efficiency and fair treatment of participating stakeholders.

Since 1966, Congress has authorized the establishment of 22 research and promotion boards that are industry-funded and empower agricultural industries, including the forest products industry, with a framework to pool resources and combine efforts to develop new markets, strengthen existing markets, and conduct important research and promotion activities.

More information about research and promotion programs is available at the Research & Promotions Programs page of the AMS website.
