GIAC Technology Use in Grain Inspection Discussion Paper

Background

The grain inspection industry has been using the same equipment and procedures since its inception in 1976. While these methods have served the industry well over the years, it’s becoming clear that they are not keeping pace with the rapid technological advancements being made within the grain industry itself. This discrepancy is causing issues or holding entities back in terms of staffing, consistency, and accuracy of inspections.

Objectives and Discussion

The committee will engage in a review of the current grading procedures under the purview of the USGSA (United States Grain Standards Act). The discussion may focus on establishing immediate, intermediate, and long-term objectives related to the integration of technology in grain inspection processes or a change in a process of current technology utilization. The objective is to identify and prioritize items that will help the system enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reliability within operations.

Next Steps

The Grain Inspection Advisory Committee will have the opportunity to discuss this topic at the next scheduled 2024 meeting and provide guidance on how to move forward.
